From Uncertainty to Renewal: Discovering God’s Call Together

Like many churches across North America, our congregation has experienced both seasons of growth and seasons of decline over the course of our long history. Now in our third century of ministry, we have learned that faithfulness is not measured only by numbers, but by our willingness to listen for where God is leading next.

In 2021, our church leadership entered a season of deep reflection and honest self-assessment. We asked hard questions about who we were and what our future might hold. At one point, we even considered the possibility of giving away our building and uniting with another congregation.

But before taking that step, an unexpected invitation arrived. We were asked to participate in a renewal process called Thriving Congregations. That invitation became a turning point in our story.

Through this process, we began learning new ways to connect with community leaders and organizations, discovering how the church can partner more effectively with others for the good of our neighbors. We revisited our mission, vision, and values, and took an honest look at our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges.

Slowly, something began to change, and a shift from uncertainty to renewal began. What once felt like decline moved toward stability. And from stability, new life began to emerge.

Today, our congregation is experiencing a renewed sense of purpose. The Thriving Congregations journey helped us hear God’s call with fresh clarity: to be deeply focused on the community around us. Out of that discernment, we have embraced four key areas of ministry—vibrant worship, addressing food insecurity, responding to homelessness, and meaningful ministry with senior adults.

The results have been remarkable. Volunteerism has flourished. Generosity has grown. New members are joining our church family. In fact, more than 92 percent of our congregation is actively involved in one or more of our mission efforts.

Even more meaningful than the numbers are the stories. New members speak about feeling welcomed, accepted, and safe. They talk about finding a place where they can both receive care and share their gifts. And perhaps most telling of all are the smiles—the quiet, joyful signs of a community rediscovering what it means to live out God’s love together.

Renewal rarely happens overnight. It grows slowly through prayer, discernment, and a willingness to follow where the Spirit leads. We are grateful for how God has been at work in our congregation, guiding us into this new chapter of ministry. If you would like to learn more about our church and the work we are doing in the community, we would love to connect with you.

The story of renewal continues—and there is always room for more people to be part of it.
